How to Floss Your Teeth

Flossing enables you to clean the surfaces of your teeth that you can’t access with a toothbrush.

  • Cut a two-foot piece of dental floss — Wrap both sides of the floss around your middle fingers.
  • Press the floss against each side of the tooth — Use your index finger and thumb to guide the floss. Move it gently back and forth and up and down. Your goal is to clean the surfaces of your teeth, not your gums. So, make sure you aren’t cutting into your gums.
  • Move to the opposite surface of the adjacent tooth — Keep going until you have flossed in between all your teeth.
